Every cable you own was coiled neatly the day you packed it. A moulded shell is what keeps it that way — the laptop that used to press through a soft pouch now presses on EVA, and the case you open on the far side of the flight looks the way it did when you closed it.

A shell, so the cables keep their coils

Soft cable pouches let the bag around them do the packing, which is how three neatly coiled cables become one knot. This one has an EVA-moulded shell under a water-resistant face, so the internal volume stays the internal volume no matter what is pressed against it. Inside, both halves are worked: elastic loops and a mesh zip pocket on one side, a divided well on the other. The zip runs on a rubberised coil that sheds a splash, which matters more in a coat pocket in the rain than in a suitcase.

Questions about the cable case

Is the shell rigid or soft?
Semi-rigid. It flexes under a firm squeeze and springs back, which is what you want in a packed bag — a fully rigid case wastes space around its own corners and a soft one lets the cables get crushed.

Will a portable hard drive fit?
A 2.5-inch portable drive fits in the divided well with its cable in the loops opposite. A 3.5-inch desktop drive with its own power supply does not — the shell is 7 cm deep.

How waterproof is the zip?
The coil is rubberised, so rain running off a jacket or a splash on a café table beads and rolls. It is not a sealed gasket: held under a tap, water gets in at the slider.
