Roll it down, no pump required
The shell is TPU rather than the PE film most travel vacuum bags use, which matters because PE goes brittle and cracks along the fold line after a few trips. TPU stays flexible cold and takes the same crease repeatedly. The double zip-lock seals the top; the valve at the base opens under pressure and closes when you stop rolling. Down jackets and knitwear lose the most, roughly half their pack height. It works in reverse too, keeping wet swimwear off everything else on the way home.

Questions about the compression bag
How much air comes out without a pump?
On a down jacket, around half the pack height. On folded cotton, closer to a third. The limit is the air trapped inside fibres rather than between the clothes, and no pump removes that either.
Will it survive a checked bag?
TPU is the reason for the price difference. PE film bags crack along the fold after a few cold flights; TPU stays flexible. It is not puncture-proof, so keep it away from a loose shoe cleat or a pen.
Can I put wet things in it?
That is half the point. Seal damp swimwear or a towel in without rolling and the double zip-lock keeps it off the dry clothes. Rinse and dry it open when you get home or it will hold the smell.
